2018 Ford Expedition vs Chevrolet Tahoe

A lot of time is spent these days discussing the relative merits of subcompact, compact and midsize SUVs, but plenty of people still want and need full-size models. Sometimes there’s no compromising their power, passenger space, and cargo capacity. Let’s take a look at two of the best: the 2018 Ford Expedition and the Chevy Tahoe.

How They Look: 2018 Ford Expedition

Quite a few full-size SUVs are starting to look a little dated these days, and it could be their manufacturers are neglecting them and concentrating instead on compact models and cutting-edge hybrid powertrains. That’s not the case with the Ford as the 2018 Expedition is all-new this year after its predecessor hung around for a decade or so. The Expedition is the perfect modern take on a large SUV and that’s instantly obvious when you see the Expedition. This Ford is one of the most contemporary vehicles of its type in the market. There’s nothing wrong with the Tahoe and its two-box SUV format with squared off lines, but the Chevy’s exterior styling looks quite dated now at the side of the fabulous Ford.

Interiors: 2018 Ford Expedition

Step inside either of these two and you might have to be reminded that they are not luxury models because the interiors would have you believe otherwise, especially inside the Expedition. There simply isn’t anything to criticize with the Ford’s cabin, which as well as being spacious for both passengers and cargo is as luxurious and well-made as you could possibly wish for without paying silly money for some of Ford’s luxury rivals.

The Chevy isn’t quite as luxurious, and although there’s a little more room in the front, the Ford leaves the Tahoe for dead when it comes to the third-row seats. Those in the back of the Chevy get just 24.8 inches of third-row legroom, but the cavernous 40.9-inches in the Expedition is just one of many reasons why the Ford takes the honors here again.

Pricing: 2018 Chevy Tahoe

Vehicles of this size and stature don’t come cheap, but that doesn’t mean price isn’t a concern for buyers. After all, as we’ve said already, these are not genuine luxury models even if they can look and feel as though they are at times. The least expensive version of the Expedition is the 4×2 XLT, and one of those has a starting MSRP of $51,790. That’s quite a lot more than an entry level Tahoe LS which has a starting MSRP of $47,500, and at the other end of the trim spectrum there’s a difference of more than ten thousand dollars between them.

Verdict

Yes, the Chevy Tahoe is cheaper to buy than the 2018 Ford Expedition, but if ever there was a case of getting what you pay for this is it. As well as being more modern, spacious, stylish and luxurious than the Chevy, the Ford is also more powerful and better on gas too. Forget the price difference and go for the Expedition if you can.
