The Ford Ecoboost Engine

The Ford EcoBoost engine gives drivers the best of both worlds, with maximum on-road power and magnificent fuel economy. Around the world, this engine impresses with its ability to deliver plenty of power, even for models like the rugged F-150 and the sporty Mustang. With the EcoBoost under the hood, Ford models rival both hybrid and diesel vehicles for reduced emissions and swift acceleration.

There’s no doubt that the Ford EcoBoost engine saves money at the pump. However, this engine also enhances power so well that it’s popular among sports car enthusiasts and heavy-duty truck drivers alike. Millions of drivers have crossed into EcoBoost territory, and it’s easy to see why.

The majority of modern Ford vehicles offer the EcoBoost engine, helping buyers achieve both improved fuel economy and reduced greenhouse emissions without sacrificing power. With its EcoBoost lineup, Ford is giving buyers an affordable alternative to both hybrid and diesel vehicles. The 2015 Mustang can be equipped with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a robust 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque – enough for thrilling acceleration and an athletic ride. The current F-150 pickup truck tows its maximum rating – 12,200 pounds – with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine under the hood.

The Ford EcoBoost engine also finds a welcome home in many practical, family-friendly Ford models. The full-size Fusion sedan is offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that produces 240 horses and 270 pound-feet of torque. That’s more than enough power for swift highway merging and lane passing. As is the norm with the EcoBoost, this engine also gives the Fusion its best EPA ratings, achieving 22 city/32 highway mpg.

To maximize fuel efficiency, the Ford EcoBoost engines are smaller than the typical fare. However, that doesn’t mean they’re less powerful than a larger engine. The EcoBoost maximizes power by utilizing direct injection and turbocharging technology, quickly making up for its smaller size.

Ford produces five EcoBoost engines worldwide: a 1.0-liter three cylinder, 1.5-liter four-cylinder, 1.6-liter four-cylinder, 2.0-liter cylinder, and 3.5-liter V6. Drivers love the EcoBoost’s combination of power and fuel economy, and it shows. Ford reports that 90 percent of Escapes sold take an EcoBoost engine with them. The same goes for half of all mid-size Fusion sedans. Somewhere between 40 and 50 percent of modern F-150 pickup trucks derive their power from the EcoBoost engine.

The Ford EcoBoost engine’s economy is even preferable to diesel power. Ford reports that the payback time for an EcoBoost vehicle is a mere quarter of the payback time for its diesel-powered counterpart.
