Used Ford Mustang Buying Guide

Used Ford Mustang Inventory

With its iconic design and blistering speed, the used Ford Mustang attracts drivers with a flair for the dramatic. Because the Mustang faces such stiff competition from its fellow muscle cars, Ford updates this model frequently. And that’s especially true when it comes to performance. Our used Ford Mustang buying guide is here show you how these models have changed from year to year!

Sixth Generation: 2015 — Current Model Year

For the first time ever, the sixth-generation Ford Mustang introduced an independent rear suspension. This seemingly small change completely transforms performance, creating both a sportier ride and a more comfortable one at the same time.

Ford Mustang Sixth Generation

These used Mustangs also turn up the heat, with more powerful engine options and all-new performance packages that leave competitors trailing behind.

And, compared to previous models, these used Ford Mustangs add to your daily drive with spruced-up cabin materials and interior styling. When you shop this generation, you’re getting one of the most sophisticated Mustangs ever made.

Here’s a look at how this generation of used Mustangs vary from model year to model year:

  • 2021: Ford rolls out the 480-horsepower, track-ready Mustang Mach 1 model. From here on out, both EcoBoost and GT models come standard with the Co-Pilot360 suite of safety aids. The Bullit model and optional Level 2 Performance package are discontinued.
  • 2020: FordPass Connect becomes standard for all models. Shoppers can upgrade performance for EcoBoost trim models with the new EcoBoost Handling and EcoBoost Performance packages.
  • 2019: The Mustang Bullitt and California Special models are rereleased.

Fifth Generation: 2005 — 2014

There’s also a lot to love about these used Ford Mustang models. Their updated exterior styling pays homage to late-60s classic Mustangs, with their big grills and canted noses.

Two body styles — coupe and convertible — are available. And used shoppers can choose from four trim levels: V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe, and GT Premium.

Ford Mustang Fifth Generation

The fifth-generation Mustang GT delivers solid power with its 300-horsepower V8 engine. And V6-powered models aren’t too shabby, either, zooming around town with 210 horses.

Check out the main alterations Ford made from model year to model year:

  • 2014: Boss 302 model is discontinued.
  • 2013: These models feature updated exterior styling. Recaro front sport seats and a performance-oriented digital gauge display become optional. The Mustang GT gets a power bump (8 horses) and manual shift controls for its automatic transmission.
  • 2012: The Mustang Boss 302 model is revived. Its 5.0-liter V8 engine makes 444 horses and 380 pound-feet of torque for an extra sporty performance.
  • 2011: Ford rolls out a new engine lineup. Mustang V6 models feature a 305-horsepower V6. Mustang GT models are even more impressive, with a new 412-horsepower V8. Additional performance upgrades, including a switch to electric power steering, revised suspension tuning, bigger brakes, and extra noise insulation, help make this Mustang sportier than previous renditions.
  • 2010: The Mustang gets yet another exterior makeover, with updated styling inside and out. The Mustang GT gets standard stability control, bigger wheels, and a power bump. Sporty suspension tuning from the discontinued Bullitt edition is now standard on all models. Sync infotainment voice controls debut.
  • 2009: Premium models now include new standard features: ambient interior lighting, satellite radio, and upgraded interior trim. Shoppers also have the option of a new glass roof.
  • 2008: New features include standard front seat side airbags and optional xenon headlights. V6 models introduce new 18-inch alloy wheels. Shoppers can choose to benefit the Susan G. Komen organization with a new Warriors in Pink package, which adds pink trim, inside and out.
  • 2007: This is a big model year in terms of new features. An auxiliary input jack becomes standard, and Sirius satellite radio becomes optional. Shoppers can now add a DVD-based navigation system. With the new Comfort Package, shoppers add power front seating adjustments, heated seats, polished exhaust tips, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The California Special Package dresses the Mustang up with 18-inch wheels, side scoops, exclusive front and rear fascia, and black leather seats. The new GT Appearance package adds a hood scoop, polished exhaust tips, and an exclusive engine cover. A new paint color, Grabber Orange, becomes available.
  • 2006: A new Pony Package is available for V6 models, improving performance with 17-inch wheels, an upgraded suspension with bigger stabilizer bars, ABS, traction control, and foglamps. GT models now offer two different 18-inch wheel options and unique suspension tuning.
