3rd Gen Escape

Today's Escape is one of the best compact crossovers available. Drivers can choose from S, SE, and Titanium trim models.

The S is stocked with everything necessary for a comfortable, modern ride. The standard Sync voice command system gives drivers hands-free access to infotainment options. Backing up is simple and safe with a rearview camera.

Escape SE drivers get a turbocharged engine for greater hauling and towing power. A keyless entry pad adds a touch of convenience. The top-trim Titanium comes standard with the MyFord Touch electronics interface, giving users access to a wider range of infotainment apps. Dual-zone automatic climate control maintains the perfect cabin temperature. The Titanium's leather upholstery sets a luxurious tone.

This Ford Escape generation features three engine options. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder generates 168 horsepower. Both the SE and Titanium come standard with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that turns out 178 horsepower. Drivers who require a little more heft will want the available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. With its 240 horses, this four-cylinder option produces V6-like power with optimal fuel economy.

On the road, the Ford Escape has some of the best manners in its class. Both the base 2.5-liter and turbocharged 1.6-liter engines deliver optimal power. The turbocharged 2.0-liter gives an even livelier performance, climbing high ground with minimal effort. Smooth handling means winding roads are no problem.

2008 - 2012

2nd Gen Escape

This generation saw both interior and exterior design tweaks. The cabin offered modern style and a longer list of luxury options. Outside, the Escape was redesigned to keep pace with the new look of crossover vehicles.

Drivers could choose from three Ford Escape models, the XLS, XLT, and Limited. The XLS was equipped with full power accessories that added passenger convenience. XLT models received automatic headlights that turned on whenever necessary. An auto-dimming rearview mirror detected and diminished nighttime glare. Limited drivers enjoyed the Escape's most luxurious cabin, with leather upholstery and heated front seats.

The original Escape engine options were unchanged from the previous generation. Drivers could choose from a 153-horsepower four-cylinder and a 200-horsepower V6. Both were paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.

However, the engine lineup was enhanced in 2009. The four-cylinder was tweaked to make 171 horsepower and the V6 240 horsepower. XLS drivers could choose an optional five-speed manual transmission. However, most models were equipped with a six-speed automatic. All models could be outfitted with either front- or all-wheel drive.

2001 - 2007

1st Gen Escape

In terms of interior and exterior design, the first generation Ford Escape remained unchanged until 2007. Drivers could initially choose between XLS, XLT, and XLT Sport models. The Limited was introduced a few years later.

The base engine was originally a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that generated 130 horsepower. In 2005, the base engine became a 2.3-liter that made 153 horses. An available V6 engine turned out 200 horses.

Although four-cylinder drivers could choose a five-speed manual transmission, most models were equipped with a four-speed automatic. The automatic transmission was standard for V6 models.
